The newly formed Preserve Minneapolis Finance Committee is looking for volunteers to assist the Board Treasurer with oversight of the organization’s accounting, reporting, tax law compliance, insurance procurement and budget planning activities. Finance Committee members will be expected to attend up to four committee meetings per year, and may be asked to undertake special responsibilities as appropriate to the skills and interest of the individual. Specific expertise is desired in the following areas: accounting and book-keeping practices and software, tax and employment law, Liability and D&O insurance products, contracts, and financial planning.
The Development Committee is focused on fundraising for the organization and is responsible for raising money outside of program revenue. Its work includes planning an annual fundraiser/donor thank you event, Give to the Max Day, grant writing, and looking for other sources of revenue. The committee is looking to add members who enjoy fundraising, event planning, grant writing, or soliciting sponsorships. Committee members typically meet every 1-2 months on a weekday over lunch in downtown Minneapolis.
The Advocacy Committee promotes preservation issues within the community through education and community outreach. Our new blog “About Town” gives one the opportunity to research interesting pieces of Minneapolis history and construct blog posts for our website. The committee meets every other month to discuss the blog and preservation news around the city. Volunteers should be interested in writing and discussing preservation topics and are expected to assist writing and editing blogs prior to posting to the website. Additionally, committee members are encouraged to attend public meetings to represent Preserve Minneapolis on key preservation and development projects and to stay current on Minneapolis news.
The Preserve Minneapolis Events Committee will be an opportunity for Preserve Minneapolis to interact with preservationists in a casual yet meaningful way and will help grow and foster relationships that will last long into the organization’s future. It will be responsible for planning and implementing all events with the exception of the summer walking tour series, which fall under purview of the Summer Walking Tours Committee. Key goals of the committee include developing and fostering partnerships with organizations to co-host or sponsor events, connect new audiences to the organization, and plan events that are no-cost or low-cost to participants. The Events Committee will grow Preserve Minneapolis’s existing Happy Hour and Breakfast with a Preservationist and Instameets. Committee members will be expected to attend all Committee meetings and at least four events per year.
The Communications Committee oversees the organization’s website, social media presence on Facebook and Instagram, and the newsletter. We meet bi-monthly to discuss strategy and ideas for promoting our tours, events, and overall mission. Each volunteer on this committee is expected to take on tasks as needed, including website updates and content generation.
Minneapolis Historical Committee
The Minneapolis Historical Committee, under the direction of its chairperson/editor-in-chief, manages and grows Minneapolis Historical (MH), a website that provides brief descriptions of historic buildings and landscapes in Minneapolis. The committee meets as needed — usually several times each year. We welcome volunteers with both a strong interest in historic architecture and good writing skills who would like to create descriptions of buildings and landscapes.
Summer Walking Tours Committee
The Preserve Minneapolis summer walking tour program celebrates the historic legacy of communities and architecture throughout the city from May to September. Tours are scheduled during the day on weekends and on weekday evenings. Our tour coordinator is present for each tour and relies on the assistance of a volunteer to check participants in and to make certain that they’ve signed a waiver. During the tour, the volunteer helps keep the group together so that everyone can hear the guide clearly and so that the tour schedule is maintained. The tour coordinator contacts prospective volunteers prior to the season to be scheduled for a maximum of three tours and coordinates with them directly in advance of the date of each tour. New volunteers are welcome.
